Frequent readers should, by now, know the importance of making a regular backup of their data - particularly your StorMan database, email & any other important files that you may have on your computer.
In fact, you only need to look back at our [growing] list of blogs about backups to find that we pretty-much love talking about them & are surprised to still get the occasional call from a customer who wasn't making any backups what-so-ever...
In order to make a backup, you'll need a medium to store the backup on. Some people burn to CD and DVD (although with data size increasing all the time, this method is becoming cumbersome & slow), while others will use a USB stick or external hard drive.
An external hard drive is probably your best option, given that they can store a lot more than a CD (about 0.7GB), a DVD (about 4GB - 8GB depending on the type) or USB stick (currently maxing-out at around 64GB). These days, you can pickup a 1,000GB+ (also known at 1TB) USB drive for under $100.
With this much space at your disposal, you could potentially also store multiple backups from different time periods - allowing you fire up the Delorian to 88 miles per hour & go to "back in time" (as it were) to pick out an older version of a file.
What does this have to do with "now" being a good time to buy a hard drive? The recent flooding in Thailand affected many peoples lives - including the workers at most of the world's largest hard drive manufacturers. Most of the factories, too, we inundated with floodwaters (see photos below). As such, hard drive stocks around the globe will dry out and supply shortages will begin to take effect - driving up the price of hard drives in the coming months.
So if you need a larger hard drive or need to buy one for your backups, now is the time to buy!
