Thank you, Kings & Queens

Hello everyone! I am back after a very informative and highly entertaining couple of days on the Gold Coast, at the 2009 Storage King convention.

And what a couple of days it was, too! We worked our way through some of the most relevant and compelling workshops and lectures that I've ever taken part in. We had a brilliant talk about 'never giving up' from the famous (or should that be infamous) Steven Bradbury - the Australian olympian who won Gold at the 2002 Salt Lake City winter olympics after everyone else in his speed skating race fell over!

If I took one thing away from his informative talk, it was that you never know what’s around the next corner (he literally won on the last corner of the race) and that as a result, you should never stop looking for the next opportunity because as soon as you do you will miss it! The highlight for me was when he handed his gold medal around (which, to my astonishment, weighed just over 2 kilograms!).

We continued on by looking at various trends in the market and the world, and how the GFC (Global Financial Crisis) has changed the face of international banking and finance. More importantly, we took a look at how this affects our self storage industry. We also touched on many aspects of marketing that are working (and, more importantly, haven’t worked), for various stores. At this point it became clear to me that our new online tools such as StorPay and Online Reservations (tools which have been integrated into the StorMan range of products) are absolutely essential in attracting new business.

On top of this wealth of information, Andy and Steven from the Brisbane office joined me on the final day as I gave a 2-hour presentation and overview of how StorMan can help businesses gain more traction in the marketplace, and how to fine-tune the product to meet your market.

The annual awards dinner was well attended by all the usual suspects (you know who you are!) and we all had a fantastic night... well into the wee hours if the truth be known. So what else did I learn? Here are some trivial & interesting facts...

  • An average Bengal tiger can jump 6 meters straight up with no run-up!
  • You can do all six “big” rides at DreamWorld in less than 2 hours.... and then some.
  • The world record for the number of rides on the "Giant Drop" in one day currently stands at 42
  • It IS possible to get thrown out of the V8 super car ride...

Yes... in case you didn’t realise, we also went to Dreamworld as part of the annual Storage King team building exercise... and I just want to take this opportunity to state for the record that "the White team rocks!". We won the day by more than a thousand points! There are a few who say we cheated, but let's just say that some cheat better than others ;-)

On a final note, I wish to say thank you to everyone at Storage King for inviting StorMan into their businesses and lives. It certainly was a pleasure spending a couple of days with you all. Lastly, a big thank you to the Funster (he knows how to thow a shindig), Tate (who knows how to carve up big waves) and to all of this year's award winners - congratulations.

See you all next year!

Regards,
Ben (General Manager, StorMan Australia).
